La Punta della Dogana e San Giorgio Maggiore
Description
“On the right in the foreground is the Dogana, around which are clustered gondolas and small boats. Across the Bacino is the Isola di S. Giorgio Maggiore, with the church and campanile. The campanile is shown with the curved, onion-shaped top which was finished in 1728.
There is a Carlevarijs composition from approximately the same viewpoint, to which Canaletto may have been indebted. A related drawing, possibly by Bellotto, is at Darmstadt; it is rather schematic and follows this work in detail down to the boats and figures.”
