Description

“In the foreground are the terraced areas before the State Granaries; peasants and men in ‘Turkish’ dress are standing about by the balustrades. Over the canal which runs through the centre is S. Maria della Salute. At the extreme right is the corner of the Fonteghetto della Farina, visible in the distance to the left is the tower of the Palazzo Venier dalla Torresella. These landmarks have since been pulled down, and the Granaries are now the site of the Giardinetto ex-Reale.
The painting may have been the basis for an engraving published in London in 1736, ‘A View of the Custom-House at Venice’, drawn by Joseph Baudin and engraved by L. P. Boitard. A very free sketch in the Ashmolean which is approximately from the same viewpoint may vaguely be related.”
