Ben prima che si scatenino le mire imperialiste del fascismo Benito Mussolini recupera e rielabora la storia di un passato lontano e fastoso, fatto di reminiscenze storico-letterarie diffuse tra gli italiani più colti e, pur in forma molto schematica, già orecchiate dai meno colti. Egli utilizza cioè una certa concezione della latinità, della romanità e del mondo mediterraneo tramandata nel tempo con varie sfumature, in diverse forme e molteplici circostanze, per dare vita a un discorso identitario capace di tenere insieme tutti gli italiani. This article soppesa gli ingredienti della storia che Mussolini racconta agli italiani in testi risalenti agli anni ‘10 e ai primissimi anni ‘20 per appurare in che cosa consistano, nella messe di suggerimenti di varia provenienza della vasta tradizione retorica nazionale, l’originalità e l’efficacia del suo discorso italico ovvero il discorso delle origini, inteso nella doppia accezione di discorso attinente alle radici degli italiani e di discorso intrinseco ai fondamenti del fascismo.

Long before the 1930’s when the imperialistic views of fascism become explicit, Benito Mussolini recovers the story of an ancient and prestigious past. A past made of historical and literary references well known to cultured Italians and, in a very simplified form, familiar to the uneducated Italians as well. That is to say he revives a conception of Latin, Roman and Mediterranean history that was handed down in time with many nuances, in different forms and circumstances, and he creates a new Italic discourse in order to keep together all his fellow citizens around a shared past, a shared identity. This article weighs up the ingredients of the story Mussolini tells the Italians in a number of texts and speeches of the 1910’s and 20’s. Its goals are to identify the Leitmotiven that he chooses and the ones he decides to avoid in order to appeal to his audience; to assess the originality and the level of effectiveness of his new discourse of the origins, which is both the discourse about the roots of the Italian people and the discourse about the fundamental principles of fascism.
