Description

This romantic depiction of the poet Lord Byron shows him seated by the Roman Colosseum, gazing on the ruins with an opened book, presumably of poetry, by his side. Although it appears unlikely that this scene was drawn from life, Byron had visited the Colosseum in the early 19th century. It appears in his long poem Childe Harold (1812–18). It is thought to have been created by engraver James Tibbitts Willmore (born 1800) or his brother and pupil, Arthur Willmore (born 1814), after the original composition by William Westall.
